Zambi Wildlife Retreat relies on Waterco for clear, hygienic water

“The tiger pool is continually crystal clear, and backwashing is at a minimum.”

There’s nothing more refreshing than cooling off in the sparkling clear waters of a swimming pool on a hot summer’s day. And for the tigers at Zambi Wildlife Retreat, that means relying on Waterco to provide peak conditions year-round.

The only one of its kind in Australia, the resort-style facility provides enriching habitats for big cats, primates, and other exotic species, retired from zoos, circuses, and the entertainment industry.

Situated in Western Sydney south of Penrith where temperatures can reach extreme levels, the Retreat has two tiger pools that allow the largest living cat species to cool off when it gets hot.

The Retreat’s tiger pools rely on a number of Waterco’s water treatment innovations to maintain hygienic conditions year-round. Zambi Wildlife Retreat is a resort-style facility that provides enriching habitats for “retired” big cats, primates, and other exotic species.

Unlike domestic cats, tigers like being in water, and swim for pleasure.

Unlike domestic cats, tigers like being in water, and swim for pleasure. Unfortunately, that was proving problematic for the existing filtration equipment, which was struggling with the excess debris brought in by the tigers every time they entered the pools.

“Maintaining high-quality, clear and hygienic water for tigers isn’t an easy task,” explains Zambi Wildlife Retreat director Donna Wilson. “They drop a lot of hair while swimming and playing in the water while the oils from their coat can clog filters.”

Not only was the pool struggling to maintain water clarity, but it also required excessive backwashing — creating unnecessary costs for a charity funded solely on donations.

Robust filtration for retired big cats

To maintain sanitised water and reduce maintenance for staff, Waterco’s award-winning MultiCyclone 16 Centrifugal Filter was installed by the experts at Swimart Minchinbury.

Specialising as a first-stage filter, MultiCyclone stops up to 80 per cent of the incoming dirt load, easing the workload of the pool’s filter media. As the device intercepts increasing amounts of dirt, the system’s flow rates remain unchanged.

The plant room is also equipped with Waterco’s Hydrostorm ECO-V 150, an energy efficient variable speed pump that provides extra power without the additional electricity cost.

The tiger pools are continually crystal clear, and backwashing is at a minimum with the use of Waterco’s MultiCyclone.

“The tiger pools are continually crystal clear, and backwashing is at a minimum with the use of a MultiCyclone, making pool maintenance a breeze,” says Wilson. “Hygiene is an important part of animal care, and the pool water not only needs to be clear but hygienic as well. This is why filtration is so important and Zambi wanted the best.”
